As last week inched up onto Friday the 13th, even the traders that do not consider themselves superstitious were feeling a bit apprehensive about market direction. Many of the major global markets traded in ranges, but overall did not show much promise for anyone hoping to confidently commit to a buy or a sell. Continue reading "Chart of the Week - Gold"

As we begin another week of trading in Gold Futures, traders are wondering if the hangover from Fridays disappointing jobs number (third month in a row where the US economy produced fewer than 100,000 jobs) will continue to pressure precious metals. So far the August futures held Fridays low, but are yet to provide a convincing rebound before the open in New York. Traders are also focused on any news from today’s Eurozone Finance Ministers meeting in Brussels, but are not expecting any major revelations. After completing a solid week of gains, the August Gold futures awaited the outcome of elections in Greece. Sunday night brought positive news early after the Greek vote was finalized, but the euphoria wore off quickly following news in Spain regarding high borrowing costs and bad loans that plague the future of the Spanish economy. Traders were buyers in most sectors early in the overnight session, then heavy sellers as we near the open of the US equity markets. The US Dollar and the Euro have already traded in very wide ranges over the last few hours. Continue reading "Chart of the Week - Gold"

Chart of the Week - Crude Oil

The chart shown below is a snapshot of the July Crude Oil futures. After spending the entire month slipping lower alongside of most of the major global markets, Crude Oil prices have tried to recover off of $82.00 a barrel in the first week of June.

One of the identifiable themes for this chart is the range that Crude traded in throughout May (see blue trendlines on chart). There were four days in the month when prices closed outside of this range, and this is what I feel is most important to highlight. Continue reading "Chart of the Week - Crude Oil"
