Bet On This Retailer For The Holidays

The holidays are right around the corner, and that means retailers are gearing up for their biggest sales and marketing campaigns of the year. While the broader averages haven't given investors much to cheer about this year, one stock could still deliver gains and brighten up any portfolio.

Unemployment is down to just 5.1% with a healthy job market, and consumer spending is up over 3% and could be headed higher for the fourth quarter. Inflation, which began this year as a negative figure, has finally begun to pick up a little in the past few months as well and currently stands at 0.2%. Retail sales this year have been choppy with growth of 0.6% in July but only 0.2% and 0.1% in August and September. However, retail sales are still up 2.4% year-on-year.

A strong US dollar has been hurting stocks, but could be a positive factor for retailers going into the holiday season. A high dollar relative to other currencies make imported goods cheaper and could help out consumers. Continue reading "Bet On This Retailer For The Holidays"

A Golden Opportunity Awaits Investors

Value investors often find themselves looking at relatively obscure companies or making contrarian bets during adverse market conditions. Sometimes, though, deep value can be found in well known large cap companies.

With the state of the global economy still largely in flux and an uncertain Fed at the helm in regards to interest rates, investors are looking for good companies that are able to weather difficult economic environments and still produce profits. For the investment banking industry, the current environment of volatility and the threat of rising rates in the future is actually a recipe for success. This Pipeline LP Pays You Just To Hold It

Daniel Cross - INO.com Contributor - Equities

There's nothing like an investment that pays off even if there's no capital appreciation. That's the appeal of renting out your home instead of selling it – you get income along with and investment. The way markets are behaving right now with the Fed rate hike delayed once again, most likely until 2016, and uncertainty driving investor decisions, picking a stock that can pay out in more than one way is a huge benefit.

Limited partnership entities differ from traditional corporations in the sense that they are obligated to pass on a lion's share of the profits to shareholders. That gives them an edge when it comes to dividend yields and makes them defensive even if they're not necessarily in a defensive sector of the economy.

The oil and gas pipeline industry might not seem like a defensive environment given what's happened with commodities and energy prices, but this sub-sector operates a little differently. Pipelines are more on the midstream segment of energy operations giving them a more stable business with steady growth prospects regardless of energy prices. Was Yesterday A Harbinger Of Things To Come?

There's no doubt about it, yesterday was a very ugly day in the stock market. Is this a harbinger of things to come?

Now that the market has the Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:BABA) IPO out of the way, there really seems to be no more magic to propel this market higher, at least in the short term.

Yesterday CNBC reported that the Russell 2000 index had flashed the "death cross". A "death cross" occurs when the 50-day moving average crosses below the 200-day moving average. Previously this has not been a big deal with this particular index, as it has always recovered a short time later. In light of what's going on and geopolitical concerns, this time may be different and may represent a harbinger of things to come.

The Middle East is another negative for stocks, as late yesterday Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain joined the US in a series of airstrikes against Islamic State positions in Syria along the Iraqi border. How long will it be before the US has boots on the ground?

As the markets chop around and seem to lack direction, sometimes the best thing to do is just be patient and wait for something to really make the markets move. Yesterday I discussed negative divergences, as we saw many of the formations setting up which can be an early warning signal of things to come. Position Yourself for Fall Fireworks

The Gold Report: On June 11, on GoldStockTrades.com you wrote, "Some of my charts are showing a potential reversal in the precious metals." What are those charts telling you in late July?

Jeb Handwerger: In early June it appeared that the junior miners tracked by the Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ), which I use as a proxy for the junior gold miners was making an inverse head-and-shoulders pattern between $34 and $35. Then the junior miners had a very strong rally in June, with an intra-day high of $46. Now we're forming what I believe is a potential crossing of the 50-day and the 200-day moving averages a golden cross. This could signal the final turn from a secular bear market to the beginning of an uptrend.

TGR: Is gold close to a golden cross? Continue reading "Position Yourself for Fall Fireworks"
